Use baking soda and vinegar to make it erupt. If you use red food coloring to color the lava it will stain. This would be a great outside activity. You can also purchase a ready made volcano at numerous stores. Purchase lava rock and pumice stone for science center for observation. Students can feel, compare weight and texture. Make a volcano in a large tub or pot using soil, have students plant (sow) seeds, observe growth and care for plants. Language Arts Make a class book about what they would take to live on an island. Use magazines to cut out pictures of the items. Geography Brainstorm and research different types of islands; tropical and arctic Compare/contrast life forms, vegetation, dwellings, etc. Using text from the book have students extend the noun/verb to make a poem. Example: Deep, deep beneath the sea… “Was a great big shark and little old me”. Students can then illustrate their words to make a class book. Reading Review vocabulary words from book. Great words for the students to learn are magma, lava, shatters, sow, thrive, plot, dock, traders, flock, tilled, and merchants. Additional resources on volcanoes are located in the back of the book. Art Design a hall mural of the sequence of the volcano. Use various art mediums and objects from nature to construct the mural.
