The Birthday Pet

                      Summary:   Danny’s parents promise him a pet for his birthday.  

                      He really wants a turtle, but everyone in his family chooses a pet

                      they want for his gift.  The pros and cons of each pet are listed and

                      finally Danny convinces his family to get him a turtle.

 

                                                                  This fiction book should be used concurrently with another                                                                                Mockingbird selection, Turtles, a non-fiction book                                                                                                 describing the pros and cons of having turtles as pets.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Activities:

 

1.   Language Arts

 

      A.   Activity:   Use Powerpoint presentation “Farmer Danny”.  Children will guess the farm animal Danny’s dad gives him using a rhyming clue.

2.   Math

 

      A.   Activity:   Make a flip book drawing each family member and the pet they chose for Danny.

3.   Science

 

      A.   Activity:    Contact zoo or pet store to bring live turtles to the classroom for observation.

4.   Social Studies

 

      A.   Activity:  Make a mural on butcher paper of the sequence of gifts Danny received on his birthday.

K.3. (B) Use vocabulary related to time and chronology, including before, after, next, first, and last.
