The Birthday Pet By Ellen Javernick Illustrated by Kevin O’Malley Summary: Danny’s parents promise him a pet for his birthday. He really wants a turtle, but everyone in his family chooses a pet they want for his gift. The pros and cons of each pet are listed and finally Danny convinces his family to get him a turtle. This fiction book should be used concurrently with another Mockingbird selection, Turtles, a non-fiction book describing the pros and cons of having turtles as pets. Activities: 1. Language Arts A.
