Summary:  This book provides detailed information needed to properly choose and care for several different types of turtles as pets.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Activities

 

1.   Language Arts  

 

A. Vocabulary:   highlighted in text/glossary at back

  Activity:   While reading book, stop at highlighted word and ask for student definitions,   followed by definition given in glossary

             TEKS:  K5  Students understand new vocabulary and use it correctly in reading and writing.

 

 B. List:

   Activity:   After reading book, have children make a list of things turtle need.

After making list, have children evaluate list and decide if a turtle would be a good pet for them.

             TEKS:  K10 B  recall important facts in a text heard or read

 

 

2.   Math

 

       A.   Look at photos of turtles in book and describe patterns

             Construct a pattern on the black-line turtle

             TEKS:  Math K5A  The student is expected identify, extend, and create patterns….

 Discuss different forms of patterns found in animals

A. True/False Review:   Power Point attachment

 

             TEKS:  K1, K3    Using information and critical thinking to make decisions

 

 

 

 

 

 

4.   Art

 

Activity:  Construct turtle from paper plate pattern---adding patterns and body parts as needed.

Each child in group must tell one different fact about turtles to be written on turtle shell.

             TEKS:  K.2. (A) The student is expected to create artworks, using a variety of colors, forms, and lines.
