Abilene ISD parents, guardians and staff members,
We have begun the 2021-22 school year “strongly recommending” the use of masks / face coverings for all students and staff members on Abilene ISD campuses and in our facilities.
A few days into the school year we have recorded positive COVID-19 cases at a considerably higher rate than we saw in the 2020-21 school year. Through the first four days of school last year, the district had recorded five active cases throughout the AISD. Through the first four days of this school year we have recorded more than 135. More than 30 of those cases are among Pre-K through 5th grade students, who are too young to be vaccinated and are among our most vulnerable student population.
We want to do everything we can to ensure the health and safety of our students and to improve the likelihood that we can keep our schools open and children receiving face-to-face instruction. The AISD Board of Trustees will be discussing possible changes to our mask / face covering protocols at Monday night’s Board Workshop meeting. We also need your input regarding what national and local health experts believe is an additional effective method of protection: the required use of masks / face coverings.
