Cheryl Cunningham, Executive Director of Federal Programs, has worked in the AISD since 1987. She served as the Director of Early Childhood Programs for twenty-three years before beginning her current position. She has extensive experience administering federal programs and has worked as an on-site reviewer for the Office of Head Start, evaluating programs across the nation. Mrs. Cunningham first joined the Early Childhood Program as a teacher in the Pre-School Program for Children with Disabilities, later becoming principal of the original early childhood campus, Woodson Early Childhood Center. First trained as a Speech Pathologist, Mrs. Cunningham holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Communication Disorders from Abilene Christian University. She later earned an M.Ed. in School Administration from ACU. Prior to coming to the AISD she worked as a speech therapist at Abilene State School and West Texas Rehabilitation Center. She holds certification in early childhood education, elementary education, English as a Second Language, speech and hearing therapy, supervision, and mid-management administration.
Having grown up in southern California, Mrs. Cunningham has lived in Abilene since 1974. She is married to Rob Cunningham and has two grown children, Lauren and Grant, who both attended Abilene schools, graduating from Abilene High. In addition, her daughter-in-law, Laura Cunningham, is a deaf education teacher in AISD.
