The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced that the Abilene High Lady Eagles are the recipients of a national ACVA Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 school year.

The 2016-17 Lady Eagles are one of only 277 high school volleyball teams in the nation to receive the award, which honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year.

To be eligible, the players had to maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Coach Didi Pierce said the Lady Eagles’ cumulative grade point last year was 95.95 which converts to 3.83 GPA on the 4.0 scale.

Members of the 2016 Lady Eagles were Hannah Tawney, Grace Ann Phillips, Jocelyn Maldonado, Haley Stuckey, Maya Taylor, Britni Starr, Mercedes Torres, Allison Pierce, Elizabeth Young, Sydnee Killam, Jaiden Franklin and Saige McCray.

Returning players for the 2017 Lady Eagles were recognized at the Sept. 11 meeting of the AISD Board of Trustees.
