ABILENE ISD PLACES 17 STUDENTS ON ALL-REGION ORCHESTRA

Seventeen musicians from Abilene ISD won places on the 2018 Texas Music Educators Association Region 6 All-Region Orchestra.

Abilene High and Cooper High each had six students named to the All-Region Symphony Orchestra after auditions on Oct. 13 at Odessa Permian High School. The All-Region Philharmonic Orchestra will feature five AISD students on its roster, three from AHS and two from CHS.

These students will be performing in the All-Region Orchestra Concert at ACU’s Cullen Auditorium on Jan. 26 at 5 p.m.

Here is a list of All-Region qualifiers from AISD:

All-Region Symphony Orchestra – Violin: Faith Fang, Naomi McCracken and Andrew Fink of AHS; Elena Yun and Matheo Vergara of CHS. Viola: Jaime Scudder, AHS; Jacob Tellez, Josephine Bandor and Jose Pena of CHS. Cello: Dylan Mills, AHS; and Jared Ripple, CHS. Bass: Brissa Guzman, AHS.

All-Region Philharmonic Orchestra – Viola: Julie Overton, AHS; Emma Voss, CHS. Cello: Gabriella Garza and Frank Fang, AHS. Bass: Summer Revell, CHS.

Both AHS and CHS orchestras are under the direction of Darcy Radcliffe and Fred Grigg.

AHS ARTIST WINS BEST IN SHOW AT WEST TEXAS FAIR 

Abilene High School students brought home Best of Show and four first place awards at the 2018 West Texas Fair & Rodeo Creative Arts Contest.

Art and photography students from AHS, ATEMS and Mann Middle School were among the participants who earned places in a number of event held in conjunction with the annual West Texas Fair & Rodeo in September.

AHS sophomore Emma Horn won Best in Show with a pencil drawing piece, and senior Lyric Kincaid won blue ribbons in a pair of categories and placed second and third in two others. Sophomore Vivian Palomalez and junior Jamie Scudder won the other first place awards. Other top finishers for AHS were Jourdin Campbell and Carolyn Lopez, second place; and Sequoia Dupree and Madison Gwinn, third place.

Mann Middle School students Donna Hopkins, Osiane Irankunda and Ava Walters all finished in second place, while Lilly Alexander placed sixth.

ATEMS students whose work earned an award were Tayva Viramontes and Valerie Lee, honorable mention.
