Voters in Abilene ISD approved the school district bond proposition on the November 6 ballot. With preliminary, unofficial results available from Taylor County, 62.8 percent of voters approved the bond package.

With passage of the bond election, the district now has authorization for $138,679,000 to be used for school construction, renovations and capital improvements.

“This represents an important vote of confidence in our school district, and I’d like to thank all of the voters for taking the time to participate in this important election,” said Superintendent Dr. David Young. “This approval from our community allows us to bring many of our facilities up to current standards and to provide premier learning environments for our students. Our goal is to attract and retain quality students and staff and this will help us do just that.”

Dr. Young says he looks forward to seeing the positive impact of the bond for years to come.

“We’ll have updated schools designed with modern security features and have athletic and fine arts facilities that our students deserve,” he said. “The bond program was the result of several months of thoughtful planning by our Board of Trustees and the district’s Master Facility Planning Committee, and I am so grateful for their time and dedication to our students.”

The bond proposition gives the District authorization to sell 138.7 million of bonds to address aging facilities, construct a Career Tech Center and to provide funds for athletic and fine arts renovations.

Specifically, the bond package includes the following projects:

  • Replace three elementary schools
    • Austin Elementary School
    • Dyess Elementary School
    • Taylor Elementary School
  • New Career & Technology Center / ATEMS
  • Athletics & fine arts facilities at Abilene High and Cooper High
  • Auxiliary sports complex at Shotwell Stadium site
  • Athletics & fine arts facilities at middle schools
  • HVAC capital improvements
