Cedar Creek Waterway ExplorersAbout 300 elementary students from Abilene ISD’s Gifted & Talented program took a post-Thanksgiving educational hike on Monday, Nov. 26.

The students explored the possibilities of the Cedar Creek Waterway on the first day back from the holiday. The Waterway project, which is in its early stages, hopes to develop nature trails and park spaces that would eventually follow Cedar Creek for 12 miles, from Kirby Lake to Lake Fort Phantom.

Students also learned about the uses of recycled water and the potential benefits of the Cedar Creek Waterway to the community Randy Barnett, organizer for the Cedar Creek Waterway Project; and Rodney Taylor, Director of Water Utilities for the City of Abilene, provided information to the students prior to the short trek though nature.

After their introduction to the waterway, the GT students plan to collaborate this spring for a fundraising 5K run on March 30 that will contribute to the continuation of the project.
