Tying a necktie is an important skill for young men to learn. At Jackson Elementary, the after school group, “Boys Club,” has been learning this skill for a few weeks now.
Boys Club is a group of 11 4th and 5th grade boys who meet once a week after school with group sponsors Paris Robertson, Positive Behavior Support Liaison at Jackson, and Matt Buie, 3rd grade teacher at Jackson. Team-building, building self-confidence, serving others and social-emotional learning are just a few of the many reasons for the club’s existence. The mentors hope to also build relationships with students and give them an additional support system to help them navigate life’s many challenges.
Each meeting consists of time to play group games together, time to have open-ended discussions about life, and time for a lesson, sometimes from a guest speaker. Tying a necktie is just one of many lessons the boys have experienced so far this school year.
“We talk about respect and what we can do better and what can help us,” says Heith Sawyer, a 5th grader.
Another student mentioned how glad he is to be in the club and that he has enjoyed it because it helps him in school and with his anger. The club will begin service projects soon in order to give back to the Jackson community.
Students are recommended for Boys Club by homeroom teachers or others on campus who know the students well.
