7 AISD Musicians Win Spots on All-Region Jazz Band

Abilene High qualified four musicians while Cooper High added three more to the 2019 Texas Music Educators Association Region 6 All-Region Jazz Band.

Caleb Queen and Coleman Patterson on sax, Brian Lester on trombone and Geanna Rodriguez on bass trombone were the all-region selections from AHS. Cooper’s Zachry Valentine made it for trumpet, Jacob Moore on trombone and Ricky Hinojosa on drums.

The honorees were among AHS and CHS students who competed in the regional jazz band auditions on Feb. 9. The five all-region students will participate in the TMEA Region 6 Jazz Band Clinic and Concert at Abilene Wylie on March 1-2.

The AHS jazz band is under the direction of Jon Kraemer, and Clay Johnson directs at CHS.

Art Students Win Awards in Three Competitions

Art students from Abilene High; the Academy of Technology, Engineering, Math & Science; and Cooper High placed students among the award winners at three recent art competitions – the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the Association of Texas Photography Instructors Fall Photo Contest and the Midwestern State University High School Art Competition.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Through the Awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. Gold Key Awards are the very best works and are automatically considered for national-level recognition. Silver Key Awards are stand-out works that demonstrate exceptional ability. Honorable Mention is given for accomplished works showing great skill and potential.

 Fifteen Cooper High students received Scholastic awards:  Micah Boykin received a Gold Key for The Window To The Soul; Juliana Gutierrez received two Silver Keys for Memory and Lost In Thought; Byrin Hollowell received one Honorable Mention for One Step At A Time; Keegan Jackson received an Honorable Mention for Tiana; Randi Johnson received one Honorable Mention for 2 looks; Skylar Joyce received an Honorable Mention for Orange Wheel; Koren Lee one Silver Key for Sun Set; Shamir Rai received one Honorable Mention for Fold; Michaela Tuncap received one Silver Key for Autumn Butterfly and an Honorable Mention for Cat Skull; Amy Yorton received one Honorable Mention for Unused alleyway; Amethyst Young received two Honorable Mentions for Grief and Open The Blinds; Valerie Zamora received one Silver Key for Double; Raevan Dearman receive an Honorable Mention for In Bloom; Kenzie Fortson received a Silver Key for Spilling the Tea; Katie Woodard received a Gold Key and advanced to national judging for Burning Bridges.

Three Mann Middle School students received Scholastic Awards: Joaquin Contreras received an Honorable Mention for SevenTenComics; Reece Martin received a Silver Key for Leon & Friends; Glorianna Nichols received one Gold Key for Bad Habits; and Jose Sanchez received an Honorable Mention for Diego.

The Association of Texas Photography Instructors 2018 Fall Contest received 7,400 entries from 99 schools and placed a total of 600 winners. Two from ATEMS received awards.  Lincoln Chandler received an Honorable Mention for sa ilalim ng putting ilaw, and Matthew Scouten received an Honorable Mention for A Small Joy Ride.

The Midwestern State University High School Art Competition was held at Midwestern State University’s Juanita and Ralph Harvey School of Visual Arts in Wichita Falls. From CHS, seven students were awarded Honorable Mentions: Charlise Anderson – printmaking; Camryn Cox – photography; Byrin Hollowell – photography; Jarred Rafan – printmaking; Summer Revell (2) – drawing and printmaking; Amethyst Young – photography; and Jarred Rafan – printmaking. Three students received 1st Place:  Chessa Black – Sculpture; Hailey Hanson – Photography; and Natalie Stefan – Printmaking.  Four students received 2nd Place:  Kenzie Fortson – Painting; Erin Gutschke – Mixed Media; Brittany Lewis – Digital Art; and Ayesha Mariwa – Printmaking. Kendra Collins received 3rd place – Digital Art. Three students from Abilene High received awards. Kelci Walraven received 1st Place, Michelle Oliver received 3rd Place, and Patricia Blanton received an Honorable Mention.
