High School Band Students Advance to UIL State Contest

Both Abilene High School and Cooper High School band students competed in the University Interscholastic League Region Solo and Ensemble competition on Feb. 23 at Abilene Wylie High School. AISD had students advance to the UIL Texas State solo and Ensemble Contest which will be held June 1-3 at the University of Texas at Austin.

SOLO STATE QUALIFIERS: Qualifying for the UIL Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest in Austin by earning a first division rating on a Class 1 memorized solo were AHS band students Nathaniel Hernandez and Karissa Ward (clarinet); Coleman Patterson (sax); Parker Fowlkes and Brooke Garduno (horn); Adrian Fowlkes (trumpet); Connor Mullins (trombone); Brian Lester (euphonium); and Zoe Fowlkes, Oscar Rocha, Josh Ward, and Dion Wheeler (percussion).

CHS state qualifiers in Class 1 memorized solo were Kennedy Carmichael (piccolo); Elisa Padilla (flute); Sonali Bhikha (clarinet); Caleb Stone and Sydney Nunn (sax); Amanda Strickland and Cooper Naredo (horn); Robert Tinney (trombone); and Aaron Parras, Hayden Nigro, Jake Aldridge, Miller Bannister, Ricardo Hinojosa, Ronald Alexander, and Tyler Cluck (percussion).

CLASS 2 ENSEMBLE – 1ST DIVISION RATING: Earning a first division rating on a Class 2 ensemble were CHS students Elisa Padilla, Lisa Smith, Malia Tedford, and Star Rodriguez (flute quartet); and Jorge Moncayo, Katie Woodard, Meredith Clancy, and Paige Greenwood (horn quartet).

 CLASS 3 SOLO – 1ST DIVISION RATING: Earning a first division rating on a Class 3 solo were CHS students Leanne Hernandez (clarinet); Kennedy Bruton (euphonium); and Keke Thompson (trombone).

11 Musicians form AISD Earn Spots at UIL State Orchestra Contest

Eleven students from orchestra programs of Abilene High and Cooper High qualified for state after competition in the University Interscholastic League Region Solo and Ensemble competition on Feb. 23 at Abilene Wylie High School.  These students will advance to the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest on June 1-3 in Austin.

SOLO STATE QUALIFIERS: Qualifying for the UIL Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest by earning a first division rating on a Class 1 memorized solo were AHS orchestra students Faith Fang and Andrew Fink (violin); Aubreyanna Embers (viola); Frank Fang, Gabby Garza, and Joel Seca (cello); and CHS students Trinity Fernandez (viola); and Harrison Heatherly and Jared Ripple (cello).

ENSEMBLE STATE QUALIFIERS: Qualifying for the UIL state in Class 1 ensemble were CHS orchestra students Jared Ripple and Elena Yun (duet).

CLASS 1 SOLO – 1ST DIVISION RATING: Earning a first division rating on a Class 1 solo was Angelina Kim (bass) of AHS.

CLASS 2 SOLO – 1ST DIVISION RATING: Earning a first division rating on a Class 2 solo were AHS students Cesar Chavez (violin), Grant Bridge (cello) and Brissa Guzman (bass); and CHS students Janelle Ripple, Adrianne Tijerina and Matheo Vergara (violin).

CLASS 3 SOLO – 1ST DIVISION RATHING: Earning first on a Class 3 solo was Chloe Ramirez (cello) of AHS, and CHS students Alex Beckett, Kimberly Mayer and Natalie Stefan (cello).

AISD high school orchestra students are under the direction of Darcy Radcliffe and Fred Grigg.

Works from eight AISD students will advance to the State Visual Arts Scholastic Event.

Abilene High School and Cooper High School art students participated in the Regional Visual Arts Scholastic Event competition at Abilene Wylie Middle School on Feb. 23. VASE is sponsored by the Texas Art Education Association.

This competition begins at the region level with nearly 20,000 pieces being submitted for judging across the state of Texas. AISD students earned a total of 37 medals for their artwork in the Region 14 competition.  Approximately 1,600 pieces advance to the state competition, and the works of eight AISD students will advance to the state competition on April 26-27 in San Marcos.
