High School, Middle School UIL Concert & Sightreading Contest

The University Interscholastic League Music Region VI held its annual East Zone Orchestra Concert & Sightreading Contest on Wednesday, April 17, 2018, at Cooper High School.  The event was hosted by Cooper High School Band directors Jenny Reece and Patrick Stevenson.

AHS, CHS, Middle Schools Earn Sweepstakes in UIL Region Choir Contest

 Abilene ISD high school and middle school choirs earned a total of 13 Sweepstakes awards at the University Interscholastic League Region 6 East Zone Choir Concert & Sightreading Contest on March 5-6 the Abilene Convention Center. The event was hosted by the AISD Fine Arts Department, led by Jay Lester.

AHS, CHS Bands Capture Sweepstakes Awards

The varsity band of Abilene High and Cooper High continued their Sweepstakes tradition at the UIL Region 6 East Zone Concert & Sightreading Contest on April 2-4 at CHS. The non-varsity bands at both AHS and CHS also earned Division 1 scores on both Sightreading and Concert performances to win Sweepstakes.

Middle School Art Students Medal in Junior VASE

Madison and Mann Middle School art students participated in the Junior Visual Arts Scholastic Event competition in Eastland on March 30. Junior VASE is sponsored by the Texas Art Education Association. Medals are awarded to students receiving a rating of 4. The artworks receiving a 4 are then organized by their division are judged again for the Platinum Event. Only 10 percent of each division entrants who receive a rating of 4 are eligible to receive a platinum medal.

Madison Middle School students whose work earned a Rating 4 are Dawn Acosta (and Platinum Medal), Hannah Cargile, Deja Joseph, Morgan Kruse, Jeanett Macias (and Platinum Medal), Chasity Mallard, Avaya Reyes, Anessa Tedford, Kaitlyn Thebo, Calynn Wheeler, and Haven Willyoung.

Mann Middle School students whose work earned a 4 Rating are Raina Baccus, Zoe Barrett, Dharma Boyd, Anna Cheek, Hailey Cook, Bailey Davis, Diego Flores, Samantha Ford, Adrian Garcia, Donna Hopkins, Osiane Irankunda, Tea Jimenez, McKenzee Lane (and Platinum Medal), Chance Lawrence, Chris Motl, Glorianna Nichols (and Platinum Medal), Elisha Ntakiritimana, Mia Prentice, Rigby Samuels, Julian Saucedo, Mauricio Saucedo, and Alexandria Zavala.

The mission of the TAEA Junior Visual Arts Scholastic Event is to “recognize exemplary student achievement in the Visual Arts by providing art students a program with a standard of excellence in which to achieve.” Not only do students create original artworks, they also write about their work and creation process. During the actual competition, they meet independently with a juror to discuss their artwork. Students are entered according to their Division, which refers to the art course in which they are currently enrolled.

According to TAEA, jurors look for originality of concept, technical expertise, understanding of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and the interpretation of the student’s stated intent. The jurors evaluate the art using the following standards:  Rating 4 – Excellent; Rating 3 – Strong; Rating 2 – Developing; and Rating 1 – Emerging.

Madison art students are taught by Brady Sloane, and Mann art students are taught by Canon Cavazos.

AISD Middle School Bands Earn Top Marks at Region Contest

Three AISD Middle School varsity bands won Sweepstakes honors at the UIL Region 6 East Zone Concert & Sightreading Contest on April 2-4 at CHS. Clack, Craig and Madison bands earned Division 1 ratings from judges in both concert and sightreading. A non-varsity combined band of Clack and Madison musicians also won Sweepstakes.

AHS, CHS Theater Students Perform at District One-Act Play Contests

Theater Students from both Abilene High and Cooper High participated in the UIL One-Act Play Competition, with both schools being selected as alternates to advance to bi-district at their respective contests.

At the 6A One-Act Play Contest on March 20 at Weatherford, AHS performed Splendor in the Grass. Sidney Irwin received top honors by being named to the All-Star Cast. Rheannon Mathis was named to the Best Crew, and Price Payne and Spencer Kasselman received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast

CHS students performed The Great Gatsby at the UIL 5A One-Act Play contest on March 8 at Abilene Wylie. Ryver Watson and Cherith Lisenbee were named to the All-Star Cast. Zachry Valentine received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast, and Kameron Lee received Best Crew.

AISD theater teachers are Kyle Martin, Kathy Fisher and Ginger Vinson at AHS, and Justin Radcliffe and Taylor Hart at CHS.
