Over the last couple of weeks, Abilene ISD high school choir students and middle school and high school art and photography students have had successful showings at both regional choir contests and the West Texas Fair & Rodeo Creative Arts Contest, respectively.

Here’s a rundown of each of those events:

Abilene ISD high school choir students auditioned for the Texas Music Educators Association Region 6 All-Region Choir.  The event was hosted by Permian High School in Odessa, Texas, on September 28, 2019.

Abilene High School placed six (6) students and Cooper High School placed two (2) students in the All-Region Mixed Choir.

Those students by section were:

Abilene High School:  Soprano I – Leann Bailey; Soprano II – Mia Mirelez and Lindsay Rogers; Alto I – Molly Mercer; Tenor II – Harrison Smith; and Bass II – Jackson Stevens.

Cooper High School:  Alto – Kyla Speights; and Tenor II – Trevor Cox.

Abilene High School placed one (1) student and Cooper High School placed two (2) students in the All-Region Treble Choir.  Those students by section were:

Abilene High School:  Soprano I – Vicky Gao.

Cooper High School:  Soprano II – Hallie Stone; and Alto II – Kadence Viel.

Both choirs will be performing in the All-Region Choir Concert at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas, on Saturday, November 2, 2018, at 6:00 p.m.  Admission to the concert is $5.

The Abilene High School choirs are under the direction of Mrs. Wendy Weeks and Mr. Remel Derrick.  The Cooper High School choirs are under the direction of Mrs. Cara Naizer and Mr. Josh Westman.

Both Abilene High School and Cooper High School band students competed in the Texas Music Educators Association Region 6 All-Region Jazz Band auditions on September 24, 2019 at Cooper High School.

The following Abilene High School students were selected for membership in the TMEA All-Region Jazz Band:  Caleb Queen – Alto Sax; Jacob Valdez – Tenor Sax; Coleman Patterson – Bari Sax; and Brian Lester – Tenor Trombone.

The following Cooper High School students were selected for membership in the TMEA All-Region Jazz Band:  Jacob Moore – Bass Trombone; and Ricardo Hinojosa – Percussion.

Five students qualified for All-Area Jazz Band and recorded an audition for consideration in the All-State Jazz Band.  The Abilene High School students selected were: Caleb Queen – Alto Sax; Jacob Valdez – Tenor Sax; Coleman Patterson – Bari Sax; and Brian Lester – Tenor Trombone.  The Cooper High School student selected was Jacob Moore – Bass Trombone and Ricardo Hinojosa – percussion.

These students will participate in the TMEA Region 6 Jazz Band Clinic and Concert at Wylie High School, February 28th and 29th, 2020.

The Abilene High School jazz band is under the direction of Dr. Jon Kraemer.  The Cooper High School jazz band is under the direction of Matthew Raines.

Abilene ISD High School and Middle School art students participated in the 2019 West Texas Fair & Rodeo Creative Arts Contest, held at the West Texas Fair and Rodeo on Monday, September 16, 2019.

Students from Abilene High School whose work earned an award are:  1st Place: Vivian Palomarez (2) and Madi Gwinn; 2nd Place: Emma Horn, Vivian Palomarez, and Madi Gwinn; 3rd Place:  Daniella Pedroza and Shannon Henry; 4th Place:  Jessica Gonzales and Sarah McMillion; 5th Place:  Madi Gwinn, Shannon Henry, Abby Soto; and 6th Place:  Abby Soto and Will Foster.

Mann Middle School students whose work earned an award are:  1st Place:  Ian Carey; 2nd Place:  Valeria Zuniga; 3rd Place: Marin Murray and Marly Gabriel; 4th Place:  Annabelle Heseman, Arabella Campo, Joseph Flores, Kieshelle Elgin, and Sarah Richert; and 6th Place:  Valeria Zuniga.

Abilene High School students are taught by April Rifenburgh and Jason Clements.

Mann Middle School students are taught by Canon Cavazos.
