ABILENE – The Abilene ISD rolled out its Summer Learning Plan for 2020 on Friday, and it includes 16 days of instruction spread out over June and July to aid students going into the 2020-21 school year.

All summer learning in the AISD will occur over four weeks, Monday thru Friday, 8 a.m.-12 p.m., on four different campuses: Bowie Elementary School, Johnston Elementary School, Craig Middle School, and Abilene High School.

The first two weeks will be June 15-18, followed by June 22-25. After a week off leading into the July 4 holiday, the final two weeks will be July 6-9 and July 13-16. Here’s how summer learning will work in the AISD:

ESY & EL Newcomers (Bowie Elementary School): The AISD will offer ESY (Extended School Year) for Special Education Students (per ARD decision) as well as for EL Newcomers and Bilingual Pre-K students. This will be face-to-face learning in groups of 10 students or less.

Elementary School (Johnston Elementary School): The AISD will offer summer learning for the following group of elementary students (required for those who failed any core course for the year; optional for any special education, 504, or EL student). Student will be able to do summer learning one of three ways:  1) face-to-face learning in groups of 10 students or less;  2) Virtual through Texas Home Learning Summer 2.0 online curriculum;  or 3) Texas Home Learning 2.0 packet mailed directly to the student’s home.

Middle School (Craig Middle School): The AISD will offer summer learning for the following group of middle school students (required for those who failed any core course for the year; optional for any special education, 504, or EL student). Student will be able to do summer learning one of three ways:  1) face-to-face learning in groups of 10 students or less;  2) Virtual through Texas Home Learning Summer 2.0 online curriculum;  or 3) Texas Home Learning 2.0 packet mailed directly to the student’s home.

High School (Abilene High School): The AISD will offer summer learning for the following group of high school students (credit recovery for any student who failed a core content course; acceleration for Spanish 2). Students will be able to do high school summer learning one of two ways:  1) Groups of 10 students on Edgenuity on campus; or 2) At-home learning on Edgenuity.

Parents whose children will be either required or given the option to attend summer school, will be receiving more information soon.
