Abilene High School seniors Brooke Garduno and Harrison Smith and ATEMS senior Frank Fang have been named Commended Students in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students across the nation who entered the 2022 National Merit competition by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Garduno, Smith, and Fang are among the nearly 34,000 of these high scorers who go on to receive Letters of Commendation from their schools and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) in recognition of their exceptional academic promise. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, some of these students do become candidates for other special scholarships.

“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Congratulations to these three outstanding Abilene ISD student scholars!
