Both Abilene High School and Cooper High School choir students competed in the University Interscholastic League Region 6 East Zone Solo & Ensemble competition last weekend (Saturday, Jan. 29) at the Williams Performing Arts Center on the campus of Abilene Christian University.

Qualifying for the State UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest by earning a first division rating on a memorized Class 1 solo were AHS choir students Shelby Anders, Hope Arrazola, Diego Castillo, Alex Dacanay, JC Enriquez, Kaylie Enriquez, Bradie Flores, Vicky Gao, Belle Marz, Gabe McCracken, Nevaeh McGough, Josh Melson, Alan Mercer, Carrie Mercer, Molly Mercer, Noah Morris, Taylor Nevitt, Mira Savage, Aiden Schwartz, Daniel Seo, Asher Shelburne, Harrison Smith, Griffin Sullivan, Nolan Sullivan, and Myra Thomas.

Those students from Abilene High who earned an excellent (2) rating were Morgan Anders, Jordan Cotton, Hope Fambrough, and Abagail Hernandez.

Qualifying for the State UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest by earning a first division rating on a memorized Class 1 solo were CHS choir students Julie Bewane, Timothy Castillo, Trevor Cox, Emani Davis, Trinity Fernandez, Brayden Flores, Logan Hamilton, Mathis Kanda, Gabie Lopez, Ian Martin, Amanda Mora, Jarred Rafan, Kaley Rutledge, Avery Smith, Rebecca Spain, Hallie Stone, Jeremiah Thomas, Kadence Viel, and Kyler Wheeler.

Those students from Cooper who earned an excellent (2) rating were Gaven Aguirre, Sayyonce Ardrey, Icinik Banks, Rae Bryan, Isabelle Espinoza, Cristian Gonzalez, Claudia Jacques, and Lauren Valentine.

The University Interscholastic League Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest will be held in May in Austin. The Abilene High School choirs are under the direction of Wendy Weeks and Remel Derrick. The Cooper High School choirs are under the direction of Cara Naizer and Josh Westman.
