Fifth Grade

Fifth grade is such an important year for students. It’s critical in the preparation for middle school. In fifth grade at Bowie Elementary, students will enjoy the opportunity to be leaders that demonstrate responsibility by turning in assignments on time, keeping up with schedules in a daily planner, completion of homework, and managing materials while switching classes. We will have some special activities in fifth grade for exceptional leaders, for example: the end of year swim party, 5th grade spelling bee, and art lessons from The Grace Museum. We also take STAAR tests in Math, Reading and Science. To prepare students for these tests, we begin with the end in mind by setting goals and working each day to grow, and learn to be proactive by taking responsibility for our learning.

We connect to our community and our world through frequent service projects. For example, our 5th graders brought socks to donate instead of exchanging gifts during the holiday season. We also raised $312.00 for Global Samaritan to purchase “Save Straws” which provided clean drinking water in countries without. This year, we plan on continuing the clean water initiative and partnering with the Humane Society.

Here are a few highlights of what we will study this year: In math, we utilize Think-Through Math, Motivation Math, and the Go Math curriculum. In reading we will study many different literature genres, point of view, story elements, and figurative language. Science class incorporates hands-on activities and labs to explore concepts such as mass and gravity, electricity and force, and factors that affect the environment. Social Studies will be an overview of U.S. History from the pre-colonial period to present. Be prepared to have a fast and fabulous 5th  grade year!
