The Abilene Independent School District offers instructional programs in kindergarten through grade twelve for students who are identified as gifted and talented in the area of general intellectual ability. The counselor administers tests each spring to identify gifted and talented students. These students are placed in their grade-level class together and are taught by a teacher who holds a GT endorsement. Students participate in the Texas Performance Standards Project, a GT curriculum. Classwork and assignments are differentiated to meet the needs of GT students through content, process, or product. All GT students have opportunities to work together as a group, work with other students, and work independently during the school day as a direct result of GT service. GT students participate in Mind Missions, a social studies curriculum that is project based. In addition, Abilene hosts a UIL Academic meet each year. GT students are encouraged to participate in these events.
