Grade Reconfiguration Plan for 2024-25

What are we talking about?

Abilene ISD is engaging our community in a conversation about the best way to serve students in grades five through eight. The model we are considering includes converting our thirteen elementary campuses into 9 elementary campuses (serving students in kindergarten through 4th grade), 4 intermediate campuses (serving students in 5th and 6th grades), and 4 middle school campuses (serving students in 7th and 8th grades).

Why are we talking about it?

We recognize that middle school is an increasingly crucial time in a student’s social, emotional, and academic development. We want to ensure that we are serving AISD students in the best way possible by providing the most effective grade configuration for all age groups.

How can you help us?

We would like you to join this conversation by giving us your feedback as we work to make the best decision for our students.

FAQs

Why is Abilene ISD considering a reconfiguration of elementary and middle schools?

We recognize that middle school is an increasingly crucial time in a student’s social, emotional, and academic development. We want to ensure that we are serving AISD students in the best way possible by providing the most effective grade configuration for all age groups.

How does this grade reconfiguration plan affect high school attendance zones?

High school attendance zones will NOT be affected by AISD’s 2024-25 grade reconfiguration plan.

Do other school districts have a similar configuration?

There are many school districts throughout Texas with a similar configuration, including Bryan ISD, Mansfield ISD, and Duncanville ISD.

How is the district receiving feedback from parents, students, and staff?

The district began this process by conducting initial surveys and stakeholder meetings with parents, students, faculty, and staff. The next steps in our feedback process include town hall meetings and a second stakeholder survey.

Will a district-wide grade reconfiguration increase my taxes?

The grade reconfiguration process will not affect our local tax rate.

How will the grade reconfiguration affect school attendance zones or boundary lines?

Please check the boundary maps and School Zone Finder on this page for information regarding school boundary lines.

What is the timeline for implementing grade reconfiguration in AISD?

If approved by the Board of Trustees, the AISD grade reconfiguration plan would begin in the 2024-2025 school year.

Which campuses will be converted into intermediate campuses?

The current proposed model would include converting Bassetti, Bowie, Martinez, and Purcell elementary schools into intermediate campuses serving 5th and 6th grade students.

What will this mean for the special programs such as bilingual, special education, and gifted/talented?

The same special programs will still be available to any student that qualifies. Grade reconfiguration will not affect the special program services provided by the district. Locations of special program offerings may change.

Will converting elementary schools into intermediate schools create overcrowding on the nine remaining elementary campuses?

There is currently adequate space available to serve the projected number of students for grades K-4 on nine elementary campuses.

Will grade reconfiguration increase class sizes?

No. Class size in grades K-4 is mandated by the state of Texas at a 22:1 student-to-teacher ratio. The new configuration will not impact the number of students or the number of teachers serving them.

Where will the books and other instructional materials come from for the intermediate campuses?

Books and other instructional materials will be reallocated and relocated. AISD will still serve the same number of students; therefore, no additional books or instructional materials will be necessary.

Will 5th grade scheduling look more like a middle school schedule or more like an elementary schedule?

We anticipate that an intermediate campus would provide students an opportunity for a gradual release into middle school. This would mean that fifth and sixth grades would look different from each other and would prepare our students to be ready for the independence of middle school.

Will the district need to hire more teachers for the intermediate campuses?

No teachers will need to be hired to implement the proposed grade reconfiguration model. Teachers are hired each year based on the number of students enrolled in AISD.

How will staff transfers and allocations be handled during this process?

Staff meetings will be held at each proposed intermediate campus (Bowie, Clack, Martinez, and Purcell) and for all 5th and 6th grade staff members to help explain this process. Following these group meetings, a survey will be sent to every staff member at a campus that may reconfigure as an intermediate school as well as all faculty at the 5th grade and 6th grade levels. Each staff member receiving the survey will be asked to rank their top three choices among campuses and grade levels. A general form will also be available for any other AISD staff member who would be interested in working at an intermediate campus. The HR department will do its best to honor top choices from each staff member affected by campus reconfigurations.

How will the extra space at the middle schools be used?

The district is still finalizing plans to optimize the use of additional space that may result from grade reconfiguration.

How will the grade reconfiguration process affect athletics?

Students will likely have the opportunity to begin pre-athletics classes starting in 5th grade. Current practices for pre-athletics and athletics for students in 6th-8th grades will continue.

How will the grade reconfiguration process affect fine arts?

Fine arts learning opportunities for students in 5th-8th grades will continue.

After completing 6th grade, will students continue to attend the middle and/or high school that they are currently zoned to attend?

High school and middle school boundaries will not be changed by this grade reconfiguration process.

Will new school buildings be built for the proposed intermediate campuses?

No new school buildings will be built in the proposed grade reconfiguration process.

How does this impact student transportation?

AISD’s Transportation Department will be an integral part of the proposed grade reconfiguration process. If grade reconfiguration is approved, AISD students will continue to receive transportation to their home elementary, intermediate, middle, or high school campus as long as they do not live within a two mile radius of their campus.
