First Grade

In first grade reading is at the top of our priority list. This includes mastering high frequency words, phonics skills, fluency, comprehension, and a joy of reading. We build these skills through spelling, the accelerated reading program, small group instruction, leveled and decodable readers, and multi-sensory, experiential learning.

First graders enjoy hands on learning experiences with assorted manipulatives while developing an essential foundation for success in math. We require daily homework in math and encourage family participation. Learning patterns, fact families, graphing, time, money, and measurement require continuous reinforcement at school and at home.

Math and reading build necessary skills for work in all other core curriculum areas. Real- life learning situations are vital to applying this newly acquired knowledge. Attendance, punctuality, and participation are the key ingredients to a successful academic career. We emphasize positive experiences that provide students a love of learning.
