Gifted and Talented

Johnston Elementary provides an enhanced program for our students identified as Gifted.  In kindergarten and first grades our identified students are served by teachers that are trained in providing a challenging curriculum to these students through additional classroom experiences.  In addition, our second through fifth grade Gifted students are provided with after-school opportunities in A+ Academics. All advanced academics classrooms provide differentiation in core subject areas with lesson extensions and project-based learning throughout the week. Students are encouraged to work on a deeper, more challenging level with open ended assignments. Some projects combine work in two or more subject areas. The Johnston UIL program is designed for students that want to do extra-curricular work with the long range goal of participating in the Abilene District Meet. It is not limited to students identified as Gifted, but they are encouraged to join this demanding work in various areas that are regulated by state competition.
