Teams Qualify for State in Destination Imagination

Three Abilene ISD teams have qualified to compete in the Texas Destination Imagination state affiliate tournament April 7-8 in Lubbock.

To earn the right to advance, AISD teams representing all three levels —High School, Middle School and Elementary — finished at the top in their events at the Greater Fort Worth regional competition Feb. 25 in Red Oak.

  • The “Phenomenal Forensics” team advanced in the Science Challenge competition at the High School level, although the team is made up primarily of Madison Middle School students and is managed by Madison teacher Matt Vela. One Cooper High student, freshman Kennedy Carmichael of Cooper High, is joined on the team by Madison 7th graders Hallie Stone and Shashiska KC, and 8th graders Miller Bannister, Andrew Brokovich, Tyler Cluck and Grace Pacatte.
  • The team “Conundrum” from Madison Middle School won regionals in the Fine Arts Challenge and is sponsored by Carol Burson, the Jackson Elementary guidance counselor who began working with these students in DI at elementary school. Team members are Meredith Clancy, Sky Barrera, Lillianna Chaong, Brandon Jones, Trevor Cox, Caryse Morrison and Paige Underwood.
  • The qualifying team from Austin Elementary, “It’s A Secret,” is made up members Jacob Castillo, Cynthia Grace Darby, Caven Dooley, Chandler Dooley, Cora Hack, Marin Murray and Mason Murray. The team is managed by 4th grade teacher Greg Zietlow.
