Woodson History

The building and campus (on 342 Cockerell St.) housing Woodson Center for Excellence stands today as a memorial to Dr. Carter G. Woodson, an African American scholar and historian, who devoted his life to education. In 1952, AISD established Woodson Jr. Sr. High School in honor of Dr. Woodson. Woodson High School was an African American High School until school desegregation in the late 1960’s. AISD is proud of this historical campus with its rich heritage of educational excellence. Continuing the Woodson High School tradition, the ram mascot and the green and white school colors will proudly represent Woodson Center for Excellence.
