State Solo and Ensemble winners with their directors and the AISD Board of Trustees

Two Abilene ISD students were named Outstanding Performers at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest (TSSEC), the highest individual honor awarded to student musicians in the state. Representing both Cooper High School and Abilene High School, these students were recognized for their exceptional performances and dedication to their craft.

Max Frick
Cooper High School | 9th Grade | Marimba
Solo: Gitano by Gomez

Max Frick, a freshman percussionist at Cooper High School, earned the Outstanding Performer designation for his marimba solo performance of Gitano by Gomez. Max studies privately with Dr. Johnny Mendoza at McMurry University and is known by his director as a student who puts in countless hours of independent practice.

"I'm still kind of in awe that I was able to do this,” Max shared. “Truly, I cannot be grateful enough to God for giving me the talent and work ethic to accomplish what I've accomplished."

Cooper Band Director John Landin praised Max’s dedication and growth: “I'm not surprised that Max achieved this great recognition. He is the last student to leave the band hall each day. He is always practicing and continues to grow his craft with every challenge he receives. I'm looking forward to seeing what he accomplishes next year!"

Izayah Jaramillo
Abilene High School | 12th Grade | Baritone Voice
Solo: Le Violette by Alessandro Scarlatti

Senior baritone Izayah Jaramillo of Abilene High School was also recognized as an Outstanding Performer for his vocal solo, Le Violette by Scarlatti. Izayah studies privately with Dr. Rick Piersall at Abilene Christian University and has been an integral part of the AHS Choir program throughout his high school career.

“This was my senior year, and I knew I wanted to leave high school knowing I had achieved something I was proud of,” Izayah said. “Through hard work, private lessons weekly, and rehearsals with Mrs. Weeks and Mr. Derrick, I was able to grow in my abilities and confidence. I feel incredibly shocked and honored to have been selected for this award. I will never forget this moment in time and the memory will stay with me a lifetime.”

AHS Choir Director Wendy Weeks commended his perseverance: “In his senior year, Izayah’s work ethic and persistence, together with his vocal maturity, have allowed him to excel in individual performances. His leadership in Concert Choir and Pure Gold will be sorely missed next year. I am so proud of his accomplishments, culminating in this prestigious award at the end of his senior year."

Congratulations to Max and Izayah on this outstanding achievement!
