Abilene ISD Athletics has launched a new recognition program to honor assistant coaches, recognizing the behind-the-scenes work that supports student-athletes, strengths programs, and contributes to team success.
“Assistant coaches are the backbone of all good programs,” Mike Fullen, Abilene High School campus coordinator and head football coach, said. “They are the glue to a program and often the most influential people on campus with student athletes.”
Head coaches across AISD agree that assistant coaches are the “unsung heroes” of athletics who put in long hours, often outside regular practice times, and play a key role in helping student-athletes grow both on and off the field. The new award program not only gives assistant coaches well-deserved recognition, but also aims to boost morale and support retention.
“Our assistant coaches are essential to the success of AISD athletics,” AISD Executive Director of Athletics James Garfield said. “They invest countless hours into developing not just better athletes, but better people. Launching this award is a long-overdue way to recognize their impact, and I’m proud to see Coach Jaime Martinez as our first honoree.”
The inaugural award for August was awarded to Jaime Martinez of Cooper High School, nominated by Head Basketball Coach Michael Bacon. Coach Martinez was recognized for his commitment to the qualities this award is meant to honor: support of athletes, collaboration with head coaches, and a lasting impact on the team and school community.
The AISD Assistant Coach of the Month program will continue throughout the school year, with each monthly recipient receiving a commemorative plaque and reward. A full list of award winners will be available on the AISD Athletics webpage.
