Shetonde Polepole, a standout senior at ATEMS, has been awarded one of the state’s most competitive academic honors: the Texas Leadership Scholars Program scholarship. He is one of just 250 students across Texas selected for this prestigious program, which ensures full tuition, housing, and fees for up to four years at one of the state’s top public universities. 

Polepole, who plans to pursue a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering and a master’s in aerospace engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, was chosen for his strong academic performance, demonstrated leadership, and commitment to personal growth and service. The program will not only provide financial assistance, but also support through mentorship and summer enrichment experiences. Scholars must maintain academic and program eligibility throughout their college careers in order to participate.

“I like to think I’m a hard worker, and that hard work has been rewarded,” Polepole said. “This scholarship reassures me that I’m going in the right direction, and that, no matter what I do, as long as I’m working hard, I will see results.”

His long-term goal is to make meaningful contributions to the aerospace field and, eventually, to the advancement of space exploration.

“The Texas Leadership Scholars Program is a prestigious group to be part of because it’s so selective,” ATEMS Principal Jay Ashby said. “Shetonde is such a great leader. He does more than he’s asked to do, and he challenges himself in every way.”

Polepole’s leadership extends beyond the classroom. His family moved to the United States and to Abilene ISD from Tanzania in 2017. Four years later, he earned a spot on the Abilene High football team, where he earned the respect of his teammates through his steady presence and mature approach. The two-time all-district offensive lineman considered pursuing collegiate-level football, but ultimately decided to focus his time on his engineering degree. 

“Shetonde was alway positive and willing to help mentor, encourage, and teach younger players,” Head Coach Michael Fullen said. “He always had his priorities in order and was a model for what a student-athlete should be in every way. I’m extremely proud of the young man he’s become. The world needs more humans like Shetonde.”

From Tanzania to Texas —and eventually the stars— Polepole’s story is just getting started.
