Abilene High School and Cooper High School art students brought home several awards from two recent contests, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and the Midwestern State University High School Art Competition.

Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and presenttheir remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Through the Awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. Gold Key Awards are identified as the very bestworks and are automatically considered for national-level recognition. Silver Key Awards are stand-out works that demonstrate exceptional ability. Honorable Mention is given for accomplished works showing great skill and potential.The following Cooper students received awards: Dikchya Biswa (silver key); and Nevaeh Martinez-Valverde and Kyle Smith (both honorable mention).

The Midwestern State University High School Art Competition was held virtually this year. Four Abilene High students received awards. Three students received 3rd Place: Vivian Murillo – Mixed Media; Dayna Thompson – Drawing; and Jaylyn Wilkins – Photography. Glorianna Nichols placed 1st in Sculpture. Six Cooper students receivedawards. Three students were awarded Honorable Mentions: Darcy Bell – Photography; Trinnity De Los Santos – Printmaking; and Sydney Gordon – Sculpture. One student received 3rd Place: Kayden Portillo – Photography. One student received 2nd Place: Morgan Kruse – Mixed Media. Jaime Herrera placed 1st in Photography.

Abilene High School art students are taught by April Rifenburgh, Jason Clements, Heather Henderson, Kelly McNamee, and Tommy Evans.

Cooper High School art students are taught by Amanda Baldwin, Sherry Griffith, Shelby Meier, and Melody Kennedy.
