Cooper High School gymnastics standout Tristan Reyna captured his second straight District 2-6A all-around championship two weeks ago at the district championship meet in San Angelo, leading the Cooper boys to a third-place finish behind San Angelo Central and Odessa Permian high schools.

Reyna captured the title with an all-around score of 111.9, easily outdistancing San Angelo Central’s Logan Kypfer, who finished second with 108.0 points. Reyna – who won the Region 3 All-Around championship last year as a junior – will try to defend that title at the Region 3 championship meet, April 19-20, at Abilene High School’s Eagle Gym. Joining the District 2-6A schools in the meet will be El Paso Hanks, El Paso Bel Air, El Paso Eastwood, and Lubbock High.

The Central boys captured the district title with a score of 322.1, followed by Permian at 317.4, Cooper in third at 296.9, Abilene High in fourth at 275.7, and Odessa High in fifth at 244.84. Central won the girls’ championship with a score of 232.6, followed by Wylie at 204.1, Permian in third at 202.1, Odessa High in fourth at 201.0, Abilene High in 5th at 185.05, and Cooper in sixth at 159.05.

Abilene High’s Korban Jackson captured the individual championship on the pommel horse, the only other Abilene ISD outside of Reyna to win a title. All four Abilene ISD teams will be in action at the Region 3 championship meet as they look to qualify for the state championship meet, which will be May 3-4 at El Paso Bel Air High School.

Reyna dominated on the first day of the all-around competition, taking a commanding lead in the competition with a compulsory-round score of 58.3, including 9.8 on the parallel bars, still rings, and pommel horse, a 9.7 on the floor exercise, and a 9.5 on the vault. He wrapped up the title in the optional round with a score of 53.6, scoring a best of 9.4 on the vault to clinch the all-around title.

Reyna, who plans to attend Texas A&M and study engineering, has won two district all-around titles, finished second as a sophomore in 2022 and fourth as a freshman in 2021. At the Region 3 meet, he finished fifth (2021), third (2022), and first (2023) in the all-around, and at the state championship meet, he finished 19th (2021), ninth (2022), and seventh (2023) in the all-around.

On the girls’ side, Abilene High’s Azurae Martin finished fifth in the all-around competition with a score of 69.9, while Cooper’s Clementine Kaylee finished 10th (63.85 points). San Angelo Central’s Kara Baker won the all-around title with a score of 77.90, followed by teammate Caroline Steele (76.85) and Wylie’s Ada McCutcheon with a score of 70.85.
