Abilene ISD Interim Superintendent Dr. James Largent announced Wednesday that Sherry Gumm has been selected to serve as the next principal of Bassetti Elementary. Gumm will replace Cecelia Zertuche, who plans to retire at the end of the school year after five years of distinguished service as principal at Bassetti.

Gumm currently serves Madison Middle School students and families as an assistant principal. She first joined the Madison staff in 2020 and has also served as an instructional specialist on that campus to encourage instructional best practices. Gumm began her work in Abilene ISD in 1998 as a behavior adjustment class teacher. She later moved on from that role to teach elementary students at Abilene Christian School for more than ten years before returning to AISD as a fifth grade teacher at Martinez Elementary in 2019.

Honored and delighted do not adequately express my excitement in being selected as the next leader of Bassetti Elementary School,” said Gumm. “Bassetti is known for its strong campus community and great teamwork. I look forward to joining together with the staff to continue intentionally creating a culture where we cultivate a desire to grow and learn in all Bassetti Bears.”

Gumm holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Texas at Tyler and a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in elementary education from Abilene Christian University.
