The 2nd Annual Reagan Literacy Night was a hit on March 22. The event was hosted by the Regan LRC, teachers, and staff in order to encourage families to read together. The theme for this year’s Literacy Night was Family Camping. All of the activities and books were tied into the theme in some way, and students earned stars for each station visited.
Parents and students began their reading adventure in the cafeteria with several fun stations. They had the opportunity to create a reading cube that they could use to help improve comprehension skills. The students worked with their parents to put together the cube. After they read a book together, they rolled the cube and discussed the book using the suggestion on the cube.
Puppet Pals was another creative station that was loads of fun. The students made paper bag puppets and used them to help read a story aloud to their parents. At a neighboring station, the students had a chance to make their own books to take home to read.
Another fun-filled station was the family game station where they were able to play Jenga and other exciting, family games.
After leaving the cafeteria, the students collected a bookmark from the Reagan Ranger, Mr. Watson, and then headed off to the STEAM lab. In the lab, Ms. Gray, the LLI teacher, shared with the students and parents about ways to make reading more meaningful by experiencing their own and other people’s cultures through award winning literature.
Ms. Gray presented books that can be found in the Reagan LRC and public library that have won various multicultural related awards. She showed several examples of books from each category and shared from several of them. The parents and students had an opportunity to look through the books and write down a book they would like to check out. The students and parents were very excited about the selection of literature Ms. Gray presented.
Then, it was off to the computer lab to answer a brief parent questionnaire about the Leader in Me program at Reagan. Once parents completed the questionnaire, they were presented tickets that they could use to finish off their camping trip with a fresh, hot Frito pie served by the Reagan office staff.
“The parents that came enjoyed the activities, learned a lot, and want to do this more often,” said library associate Miss Johnson, who added that the event was a hit and attendance was up from last year.
