Abilene ISD is seeking community volunteers to participate in its annual “Every Student Counts: Abilene ISD Walk for Graduates” on Saturday, Sept. 15.

“Walk for Graduates” is a community and district outreach partnership where volunteers go door-to-door in an attempt to recover students who have not returned to school or those who are chronically absent. After the district identifies students who have not shown up for class at the beginning of the school year, trained volunteers visit the homes of these students, provide encouragement and offer available resources so they will return, stay and finish school.

AISD employees will lead a training session for community volunteers prior to accompanying groups throughout the identified neighborhoods. District employees will provide materials and transportation. Registration and a continental breakfast will kick off the day’s events at 9:30 a.m. at One AISD Center, 241 Pine St. A 30-minute training session will begin at 10 a.m. and the “Walk for Graduates” will be held from 10:30 until noon.

Volunteers may register at www.abileneisd.org under the link, “2018 Walk for Graduates.” AISD invites anyone who wishes to participate to volunteer by Monday, Sept. 10. For more information, contact Jeff Brokovich at 677-1444, ext. 5525 or jeffrey.brokovich@abileneisd.org.
