The University Interscholastic League’s annual Snapshot Day was last Friday (Oct. 27), which is the enrollment figure reported by each school in Texas that will be used in determining what classification and division schools will be placed in for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years. Abilene High turned in 2,026 students, which will keep the Eagles in Class 5A Division I, while Cooper turned in 1,7775 students, which will keep the Cougars in Class 5A Division II. Two school districts in each team’s district could be making moves because of changes to the Lubbock Cooper and Wichita Falls school districts. Lubbock Cooper has opened Lubbock Cooper-Liberty, and it will compete as a Class 4A Division II school (652 students), which dropped Lubbock Cooper’s enrollment to 1,893. Based on the cutoff numbers put in place for the last realignment, that would put Lubbock Cooper – which currently competes against Abilene High in District 2-5A Division I in Class 5A Division II with Cooper, Amarillo Palo Duro, Lubbock High, Wylie, and Plainview. The other change could come out of Wichita Falls, where the WFISD will close all of its old high schools – Rider, Wichita Falls High, and Hirschi – and combine them into two new schools, Legacy and Memorial, leaving WFISD with two larger schools. Legacy turned in 1,933 students, and Memorial 1,641 students. Legacy could flip spots with Lubbock Cooper (Legacy going to District 2-5A Division I and Cooper dropping to District 2-5A Division II) to keep both districts at seven schools. The UIL will release cutoff numbers for Class A to Class 6A in the coming months before the biennial realignment on Feb. 1, 2024.
