Abilene High School freshman Hollie Nowlan and two classmates were big winners in the recent Scholastic Art & Writing competition. Since 1923, the competition has recognized some of America’s most celebrated artists, including author Stephen King, poet Amanda Gorman, and visual artist Andy Warhol.

King’s most well-known works include The Shining, Carrie, Misery, and It, among others. Gorman burst onto the scene in January 2021 with her original work “The Hill We Climb” at the inauguration of President Joe Biden, and Warhol was a leader of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s.

Nowlan – whose work of art titled “Calmness” was on exhibit at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in March – won the Gold Key Award for her work titled “Beyond the Drawing,” and she earned an honorable mention certificate for her work titled “If Calmness was a Painting.”

Molly Carroll won a Gold Key award for her piece of art titled “Changes” and an honorable mention for her work titled “Why Didn’t You Teach Me How to Swim?” And Jonathan Leon won a Gold Key for his photographic work titled “A … Experience.”

Each Gold Key-winning selection will move on to the national competition, with winners announced later this spring.
