Fifty eighth graders and 68 seventh graders at Mann Middle School are working their way toward skills for success in a global society.
These students were identified by faculty members to participate in an AVID elective course that charts them for success in post high school education and future skills for success. Participation in the class requires success in at least one Pre-AP class and keeping an average above 80 in all classes each six weeks.
AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills.
Last summer, six Mann teachers attended a three-day training in San Antonio to learn strategies which include collaborative learning and high engaging activities for student success. The summer of 2017, six Mann teachers also attended the training in order to support the AVID students with strategies for success. In addition to training, teachers commit to working with students in Pre-AP classes helping them navigate the rigor and requirements for the Pre-AP class of their choice.
During the AVID class, students work on skills for success in school and beyond. Curriculum during the year focuses on success strategies using WICOR: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading. In addition, students participate in student led tutorials working toward mastery of classwork from the week. Students also work on leadership skills and organizational tools for all their classes. This year students will also attend field trips to colleges and universities as they look toward their future beyond high school.
Mrs. Campo, the AVID elective teacher for both the 7th and 8th grade AVID classes, is in her second year to lead the program.
“Students are realizing that organization is the key to success,” said Mrs. Campo. “It’s easier for them to keep up with only one binder (the AVID strategy of a big binder) instead of one per class. Today (in the fifth week of school) students voiced that they are beginning to feel empowered to abbreviate on notes they take in class as they are learning strategies that improve their note-taking. This helps them make meaning of the content – another AVID strategy. We’re excited to see where the beginning of the AVID elective class takes our students in the future!”
