ABILENE — Jefferson Center principal Barbara Massey has been honored as one of four winners of the 21st annual Champion for Children Child Abuse Prevention Conference awards.

The annual conference was scheduled for March 31-April 1, but was cancelled because of the current COVID-19 pandemic. Each year, award nominations are accepted in four categories for professionals, volunteers, businesses, caregivers and other community partners who go above and beyond in serving the children and families in our community.

Massey was awarded as the Community Champion and captured the honor for “working with at-risk students and helping them become better students by being a firm but loving role model.”

Massey is in her fourth year as the principal at the Jefferson Center and has spent 30 years in the AISD.

Other award winners are Alexis McClain, adoptions worker with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (Child Welfare Champion); Det. Chris Milliorn, a forensic specialist in the Abilene Police Department’s Cyber Crimes Unit (Frontline Champion); and Michelle Perkins, Director of New Horizons’ Audrey Grace House (Heart of the Champion).
