Mary Helen Gonzalez
My name is Mary Helen Gonzalez, and I am the Assistant Principal at Myra P. Martinez Elementary. I feel honored to be assigned to this new campus. It gives me a feeling of coming home again. I feel close to this campus and its students in many ways. As an educator for 33 years, I spent over 13 years of my career as a teacher at Fannin Elementary and one year as an Assistant Principal at College Heights Elementary (2012-2013). I also served as Assistant Principal at Bassetti Elementary and Program Office for Bilingual Education for Abilene ISD. In 2011, after 31 years in education, I retired from the district only to return to my first love – the education of young children. I am also involved in other projects including the P16 Council, Teacher Retirement Member, and a lunch group of old colleagues that meet once a month come rain or shine! I love being an educator and feel very fortunate to be working with an excellent faculty and staff. Together we will build positive relationships with our students, parents, and community.
I would like to take this opportunity to say how proud I am to be working at Martinez Elementary School as one of your assistant principals. At the end of the 2016 school year I retired after 30 years in education, 28 years of that being in Abilene ISD. It is an honor to come back to the district and work at one of Abilene’s finest elementary schools.
I grew up in Trent, Texas where I graduated from Trent High School. After I received my B.S. degree from McMurry University, and my M.Ed. from Sul Ross State University, I completed my principal certification from Tarleton State University.
I look forward to serving the wonderful children and parents here at Martinez Elementary and I am very proud to be a Martinez Tiger! Please let me know if I can help you in any way. We are going to have a great year!
