Language Arts refers to the skills and processes involved in reading, writing, listening, and speaking that help students become proficient in using language. Students who do not acquire these literacy skills find themselves at a serious disadvantage in not only school, but in social settings, as civil participants, and in the working world.

Abilene ISD strives to produce literate citizens who are prepared to compete in the global economy and who have the skills to pursue their own learning well beyond high school. In order to achieve this goal, AISD ensures ongoing literacy development for all students in grades K-12 through the use of state and local assessment data, adherence to state curriculum, implementation of research-based literacy programs and activities, and provision of intentional staff-development for all educators.
